Day 116
Reading: 1 Chron. 11:1 - 1 Chron. 13:14
Who surrounds you? What makes those around you tick? Why should anyone follow you? Reading today's portion of scripture I was challenged on various aspects of being a leader sent by God. David emulated a style of leadership that turned worthless men to great champions. What may we learn from David's leadership in this passage?
Firstly, David loved God. The Word declares that God was with David. He on becoming the King sought for the Ark of the Covenant to be brought to Jerusalem because the children of Israel had not inquired of it. David understood that the Ark was important to maintain the covenant with God. Is God with you in your leading?
Secondly, David was surrounded by different skillsets. He had men who were giant killers. He also had men who understood timing. The sons of Issachar had an understanding of the times. They understood seasons and timings of seasons. It's important to be surrounded by people who understand the timings of seasons in our lives.
Thirdly, He attracted not only the best of the people but also those who were considered worthless. He despised no one. David received all those who wanted to join him not on account of where they came from but because he believed in their potential. Do you choose people who can follow you because of their background or capacity to make you? David had levels within his circles. No one got appointed without proving themselves as worthwhile. However, anyone could follow him.
David had the favour of God and men. Notice that even when Saul who was from the tribe of Benjamin was seeking to kill David, however, some Benjamites went to be with David. This shows that David attracted people across the nation even those who were considered his enemies. He didn't just have his friends or tribesmen following him. He had people from every tribe following him. We need to reflect this kind of following in our endeavours.
In conclusion, one incident where David was thirsty for water and when the water was brought to him he didn't drink it but instead offered it to God. David placed value on the lives of those around him. His value was not just in appreciating them but in worship to God. How many times do we see leaders today use those around them for their own good and never see their service as worship to God? Value those following you and see their deeds of selflessness as worship to God not to build your ego.
