Set Apart

Days are really moving fast. It's the beginning of a new month. As we began this month today in our 90 day bible adventure we move into a new book, namely Daniel. The first chapter of this book lays a foundation that sets the pace for the entire book.

Daniel and his friends were captives who were selected to serve under the King of the day. They were far from home and were suddenly thrust in the palace for training on the ways of their masters. There are two main things I want to point out from the first few verses of Daniel 1.

Firstly, notice that Daniel had a name change but he is not referred to by that name. Amazingly his friends took on the names they were offered. Could this be the reason that Daniel who name means " God is judge" served many kings in a position of seniority? Yes his other friends also served in senior positions but Daniel was soon considered wiser that all the wise people who advised the king. Daniel refused to have his identity changed. He understood that he would need God to be his judge in Babylon the place of his captivity. The name that society was giving him, Belteshazzar was to simply call him a "lord of the treasure". He simply did not want to be lowered by being associated with treasure.

Secondly, we see Daniel's determination to serve God and to live according to God's standards in that he refused to live by the delicacies of the world. As I have thought about this today I have been encouraged to live a consecrated life. Daniel determined not to defile himself with the pleasures of this world. What is hindering my living a consecrated life? Certainly looking at Daniel, his love for God, his commitment to God certainly resulted in his walking with favour.

I urge that you pursue a life that is consecrated. God is seeking a consecrated people, as such people attract God whatever the circumstance they are facing. God is looking for people who are set apart for Himself that He may show forth His glory.

A better tomorrow

Everyone is hopeful for a better tomorrow. That's why we say "Good morning" at the start of the day. It's an indicator of the hope within that welcomes the dawning of a new day to bring better fortunes our way. God's mercies are new every morning and His compassion does not fail. When faced with adversity it becomes harder to see a better tomorrow, but resilient people are focused on the fact that trouble is only a comma in the sentence of life. At a time where fear has gripped many hearts because of various reasons, it is difficult to remain hopeful. Without hope, you cannot have the faith necessary to live. Faith is the substance of what is hoped for. Faith gives hope tangibility. To be without hope is to open the door of low living. Hopelessness is the start of damnation in life. You and I were born for a reason. We are not just statistics, making up numbers in any particular nation. You and I were born to reign in life. That situation that has so far made...

Absalom's Treachery

Day 91 Reading: 2 Sam. 14:1 - 2 Sam. 15:37 One of life's most painful lessons is the treachery of human beings. When family or friends hurt you and leave you grieving the pain is not the same as when someone out on the street does something wrong. The pain goes deeper and it's easy to become bitter. Absalom had fled from Israel knowing that he was a wanted man for the murder and revenge on Ammon his step-brother. Joab arranged for a wise woman to go see David and get him to forgive Absalom. The wise woman made David realise that he was not setting a godly example by exiling Absalom. The wise woman made David understand that God will not banish anyone but he will seek the person out. God will do everything in His power to restore the banished person. The wise woman was asking David not to forget the grace of God that enables one to enjoy forgiveness. David gets Absalom brought back to Jerusalem however for 2 years he didn't see him. Now, this was worse than ...

Lessons From A Parable

Day 259 Reading: Luke 14:1 - Luke 16:31 The thoughts that God has for you are too many to be counted. Jesus while speaking asked the disciples if they knew the number of hairs that fall off their head? Jesus told them that God is so interested in the minute details about us that He knows when one hair falls down. God is so detailed about our lives because He is good. When you embrace the goodness of God by understanding that God's love towards us is immeasurable. Whilst reading today's passages my heart was refreshed as I read a very famous parable featuring the prodigal son.   Jesus tells us of two sons and a father. The younger son asked for his inheritance and left home leaving the elder son and his father.  The younger went to a faraway land and wasted his life. He soon was dead broke, deserted by his new found friends and looking for a job. He soon was working for a farmer feeding his pigs. His job must have been so mundane with low pay as he ate the food the...
