Not By Might, Nor By Power, But By God's Spirit

Day 241

Reading: Zechariah 1:1 - Zechariah 6:15

God's word is powerful. It is backed by Heaven. God backs His Word. Angels perform God's word Psalms 103:20. God created the world by His Word Genesis 1:3. We live in a day and age where many don't believe in God. The world is in need of men and women who will believe God at His word to see its power released here on earth. A recent survey by the BBC in the UK revealed that 3 in 5 people believe in miracles. People are hungry for miracles.

The Bible gives us clues to seeing miracles in our lives. Zechariah was raised to encourage the people during a time where they were struggling to rebuild the Temple. Zechariah was addressing the children of God who had returned from captivity under the direction of Darius to return home and rebuild their land. God's word will overtake you. If I use the narrative of a car on a highway, the promise may be behind you or far from the view of your mirrors. However, understand that God's promise will overtake you Deuteronomy 28:2.

Zechariah speaks words of encouragement and also sees visions of a glorious coming by the Messiah. Reading through today's reading I was struck by how much insight into the happenings of the coming days was revealed to Zechariah. In today's blog, I won't focus on the visions of the coming days however I will dwell on a particular portion of passage that ministered to me. Zechariah encourages Zerubbabel as the children of Israel were facing a challenge in completing the mission of rebuilding the temple. Zechariah gives three instructions that are relevant to this day and age.

  • Build not according to your ability but in accordance with the Spirit. Let the Spirit of God guide your steps towards accomplishing the vision. Many today are on a mission given by God but have not asked God for wisdom or knowledge to undertake the mission. Might refers to the collective strength whereas power is the individualised strength.
  • Speak to the mountain. God created the heavens and the earth and it was covered in darkness. He didn't fret about His creation. God spoke to creation. That dark situation facing you cannot stand light. Open your mouth and speak to it. Many times we agree with the situation or cry about it. 'Let there be light' should be the first phrase you speak to every dark situation. The Word of God is light. When you speak the Word of God to any mountain it must melt. Speak to the mountain in faith. Don't be timid in your proclamations against mountains in life.
  • Don't despise the day of small beginnings. The children of God were facing opposition to the rebuilding as we saw in the Book of Ezra. Zechariah encourages them to celebrate the small steps and to understand that the day of celebration will come when they complete it.
Zechariah prophesies that shouts of grace would fill the air at the Temple as he sets the chief cornerstone in place. Zerubbabel would celebrate accomplishment by giving thanks for the grace to rebuild the Temple. May God pour out His grace to you and I that we may build according to His pattern.

Memory Verse: Zechariah 3:7

Decree:

Zechariah 4:6
So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts. ‘Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain! And he shall bring forth the capstone with shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” ’ ” (italics mine)

A better tomorrow

Everyone is hopeful for a better tomorrow. That's why we say "Good morning" at the start of the day. It's an indicator of the hope within that welcomes the dawning of a new day to bring better fortunes our way. God's mercies are new every morning and His compassion does not fail. When faced with adversity it becomes harder to see a better tomorrow, but resilient people are focused on the fact that trouble is only a comma in the sentence of life. At a time where fear has gripped many hearts because of various reasons, it is difficult to remain hopeful. Without hope, you cannot have the faith necessary to live. Faith is the substance of what is hoped for. Faith gives hope tangibility. To be without hope is to open the door of low living. Hopelessness is the start of damnation in life. You and I were born for a reason. We are not just statistics, making up numbers in any particular nation. You and I were born to reign in life. That situation that has so far made...

Lessons From A Parable

Day 259 Reading: Luke 14:1 - Luke 16:31 The thoughts that God has for you are too many to be counted. Jesus while speaking asked the disciples if they knew the number of hairs that fall off their head? Jesus told them that God is so interested in the minute details about us that He knows when one hair falls down. God is so detailed about our lives because He is good. When you embrace the goodness of God by understanding that God's love towards us is immeasurable. Whilst reading today's passages my heart was refreshed as I read a very famous parable featuring the prodigal son.   Jesus tells us of two sons and a father. The younger son asked for his inheritance and left home leaving the elder son and his father.  The younger went to a faraway land and wasted his life. He soon was dead broke, deserted by his new found friends and looking for a job. He soon was working for a farmer feeding his pigs. His job must have been so mundane with low pay as he ate the food the...

Absalom's Treachery

Day 91 Reading: 2 Sam. 14:1 - 2 Sam. 15:37 One of life's most painful lessons is the treachery of human beings. When family or friends hurt you and leave you grieving the pain is not the same as when someone out on the street does something wrong. The pain goes deeper and it's easy to become bitter. Absalom had fled from Israel knowing that he was a wanted man for the murder and revenge on Ammon his step-brother. Joab arranged for a wise woman to go see David and get him to forgive Absalom. The wise woman made David realise that he was not setting a godly example by exiling Absalom. The wise woman made David understand that God will not banish anyone but he will seek the person out. God will do everything in His power to restore the banished person. The wise woman was asking David not to forget the grace of God that enables one to enjoy forgiveness. David gets Absalom brought back to Jerusalem however for 2 years he didn't see him. Now, this was worse than ...
