Growth

Day 271

Reading: Acts 5:1 - Acts 8:40

Only 120 disciples encountered the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Day. By the time Peter had preached the Word of God 3000 souls were added to them. The Bible records that daily the church saw an increase. As I read this statement my heart was stirred to ask what does God use to increase a church?

  • The Holy Spirit. Without the aid of the Holy Spirit, we cannot see growth in church or personally. The power of God is released by the Holy Spirit and this draws people to God. The Holy Spirit is not pointing people to the vessels being used. His role is to point people to Jesus and no one else. When we take the glory the move of God stops. Many believers have seen the power of God. Even more, can tell you of how it used to be but now cannot see the power of God. The main reason being that the fire needed to maintain the move of God is lost because we give the honour due to God to a man. Simon thought he could buy the gift of the Holy Spirit and discovered that money cannot buy God's gifts.
  • Persecution: In the Book of Exodus we are told how the children of Israel were persecuted by Pharaoh. One thing that Moses pointed out is that the children of Israel multiplied and grew during this season even more than before Exodus 1:12. The early church also had a scenario where they were persecuted and the result was an increase in numbers. The brethren were all concentrated in Jerusalem and for the gospel to spread persecution was a driving force as it forced many believers to flee Jerusalem and seek refuge in different cities. Learn that trouble will cause you to grow when embraced.
  • The Fear of God. Many times we see this statement in the Book of Acts. What is this fear of God? It is a holy awe of God. This holy awe makes one hate anything God hates and love only what God loves. The fear of God makes one hate sin. The fear of God helps protect the believer.
There are many other factors that lead to church growth however this three were highlighted to me to encourage me. I pray that my heart is a throne for the fear of God.

Memory Verse: Acts 5:12

And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. (italics mine)

A better tomorrow

Everyone is hopeful for a better tomorrow. That's why we say "Good morning" at the start of the day. It's an indicator of the hope within that welcomes the dawning of a new day to bring better fortunes our way. God's mercies are new every morning and His compassion does not fail. When faced with adversity it becomes harder to see a better tomorrow, but resilient people are focused on the fact that trouble is only a comma in the sentence of life. At a time where fear has gripped many hearts because of various reasons, it is difficult to remain hopeful. Without hope, you cannot have the faith necessary to live. Faith is the substance of what is hoped for. Faith gives hope tangibility. To be without hope is to open the door of low living. Hopelessness is the start of damnation in life. You and I were born for a reason. We are not just statistics, making up numbers in any particular nation. You and I were born to reign in life. That situation that has so far made...

Blessing or ....

To live well is one thing we all desire. I have never met anyone who did not want to live well. By living well for some people it means helping others. For others it means having a successful business. Yet for others it means travelling the world. I have discovered that it is not money that empowers but the blessing of God that empowers. Money is simply one of the many ways that the effects of the blessing may show up. Many times today in society we confuse money with being blessed yet people like Mother Teresa did not flaunt money but her life still is blessing many people round the world. The book of Deuteronomy has challenged me to desire to be blessed. Anyone who has walked with the blessing of God in their live has seen doors open that are a struggle for others. Yesterday I wrote about obedience. What obedience opens our lives to is the operation of the blessing. By choosing to obey the Word we are choosing to open our lives to be blessed. The purpose of being blessed is not self ...

Absalom's Treachery

Day 91 Reading: 2 Sam. 14:1 - 2 Sam. 15:37 One of life's most painful lessons is the treachery of human beings. When family or friends hurt you and leave you grieving the pain is not the same as when someone out on the street does something wrong. The pain goes deeper and it's easy to become bitter. Absalom had fled from Israel knowing that he was a wanted man for the murder and revenge on Ammon his step-brother. Joab arranged for a wise woman to go see David and get him to forgive Absalom. The wise woman made David realise that he was not setting a godly example by exiling Absalom. The wise woman made David understand that God will not banish anyone but he will seek the person out. God will do everything in His power to restore the banished person. The wise woman was asking David not to forget the grace of God that enables one to enjoy forgiveness. David gets Absalom brought back to Jerusalem however for 2 years he didn't see him. Now, this was worse than ...
