Remember Lot's Wife

Day 260

Reading: Luke 17:1 - Luke 20:47

Do you feel frustrated? Do you feel like life is passing you and God seems to be far? I know many people who are at the place of giving up. Many today are fighting inner thoughts of failure and have a mental battle to just stay alive. As I was preparing to write this blog after having spent time in the Word I began to feel the need to just encourage myself. Just because it seems that your life and the promises of God are parallel lines don't assume that will be your state forever.

While reading today's passages I was struck by the phrase Jesus used to warn the disciples of the days ahead, 'Remember Lot's wife.' Lot was Abraham's nephew who after seeing his wealth increase and to avoid strife between their herdsmen opted to move to Sodom. He chose where to stay without consulting God. The Bible says he saw the land looked good and decided to settle there, however, Sodom which was where he settled was full of depravity. Be careful of going to the place where God has not assigned you. One thing I have discovered in my walk with God it's easy to lie to myself that God is with me yet He is far from me. Lot had been blessed by God however he didn't realise that it's easy to miss out on God's best.

Two angels were sent to Sodom to rescue Lot and his family after Abraham's intercession. As Lot and his family are leaving Sodom they are given instructions not to turn back. However, Lot's wife turns back and is turned into a pillar of salt. Why would Jesus warn the disciples to remember Lot's wife? Why did she turn back?
  • She was facing a nomadic lifestyle after having enjoyed the city life. Be careful that when God calls you to go somewhere you don't look back from where He has called you from. The good old days is an evil saying since the path of the just shines brighter Proverbs 4:18
  • Lot and his family were facing financial ruin. They were sent with nothing. The loss was painful and many times we just look back and wish we did not have to leave what we once had. To stay where God has commanded you to leave will result in your failing.
  • What was inside her that made her look back was not the life of God. Lot and his family had imbibed the low morals of Sodom. When the people surrounding his residence asked for the angels that they may lie with them Lot offered his daughters. Why would the mother want to turn back to a place that would have brought more pain? Be careful that you don't allow emotional attachments to kill your progress.
  • Her heart was not set on the plan of God. God's plan was safety yet she disobeyed the instruction to not look back. When the call of God is not a priority the world looks appetising. I wondered how Lot felt seeing his wife judged for disobedience. Spouses support one another in following God's call. When a spouse doesn't support the other it can lead to marital breakdown. Lot later committed incest unknowingly as his wife was dead.
Lot's wife is the believer who longs for the world and without realising it they end up losing the life God designed for them. Search your heart and ask yourself if there is anywhere you are holding onto the world and moving to where God has sent you. Dear spouse, be careful that your desire for the things of this world is not killing your marriage. Many today have been caught in a trap. They chasing of the things of this world has been greater than the pursuit of the things of God. We have many who were on fire for God many years ago, willing to give anything and everything but the things of this world have held them back from following God further.

Memory Verse: Luke 20:25

A better tomorrow

Everyone is hopeful for a better tomorrow. That's why we say "Good morning" at the start of the day. It's an indicator of the hope within that welcomes the dawning of a new day to bring better fortunes our way. God's mercies are new every morning and His compassion does not fail. When faced with adversity it becomes harder to see a better tomorrow, but resilient people are focused on the fact that trouble is only a comma in the sentence of life. At a time where fear has gripped many hearts because of various reasons, it is difficult to remain hopeful. Without hope, you cannot have the faith necessary to live. Faith is the substance of what is hoped for. Faith gives hope tangibility. To be without hope is to open the door of low living. Hopelessness is the start of damnation in life. You and I were born for a reason. We are not just statistics, making up numbers in any particular nation. You and I were born to reign in life. That situation that has so far made...

Lessons From A Parable

Day 259 Reading: Luke 14:1 - Luke 16:31 The thoughts that God has for you are too many to be counted. Jesus while speaking asked the disciples if they knew the number of hairs that fall off their head? Jesus told them that God is so interested in the minute details about us that He knows when one hair falls down. God is so detailed about our lives because He is good. When you embrace the goodness of God by understanding that God's love towards us is immeasurable. Whilst reading today's passages my heart was refreshed as I read a very famous parable featuring the prodigal son.   Jesus tells us of two sons and a father. The younger son asked for his inheritance and left home leaving the elder son and his father.  The younger went to a faraway land and wasted his life. He soon was dead broke, deserted by his new found friends and looking for a job. He soon was working for a farmer feeding his pigs. His job must have been so mundane with low pay as he ate the food the...

Absalom's Treachery

Day 91 Reading: 2 Sam. 14:1 - 2 Sam. 15:37 One of life's most painful lessons is the treachery of human beings. When family or friends hurt you and leave you grieving the pain is not the same as when someone out on the street does something wrong. The pain goes deeper and it's easy to become bitter. Absalom had fled from Israel knowing that he was a wanted man for the murder and revenge on Ammon his step-brother. Joab arranged for a wise woman to go see David and get him to forgive Absalom. The wise woman made David realise that he was not setting a godly example by exiling Absalom. The wise woman made David understand that God will not banish anyone but he will seek the person out. God will do everything in His power to restore the banished person. The wise woman was asking David not to forget the grace of God that enables one to enjoy forgiveness. David gets Absalom brought back to Jerusalem however for 2 years he didn't see him. Now, this was worse than ...
