Day 87
Reading: 2 Samuel 1:1 - 3:39
Life is filled with ironies. Have you ever been in a situation and you wonder how could this happen? As David was recovering all that he had lost Saul was being killed. 3 days after David had received his victory he receives a report from the battlefront. The second book of Samuel opens with how David saw prophecy became manifest. A new chapter will open in your life with you taking over the place you were born for.
A young man, an Amalekite runs from the battlefront to David and gives him the news that Saul was dead. He then recounts how Saul asked him to kill him off for he had a wound that would not heal according to him. It's interesting how human beings can decide that this one is 'dead' forgetting that God is a specialist in impossible situations. This is one of the most ironical passages in the bible. Saul disobeyed God when it came to destroying Agag the King and the people he led the Amalekites. What he couldn't do by killing Agag he asks the Amalekite to do to him. The king of Israel, anointed by God, asked his enemy to kill him off. This young man then runs to David who had just battled some Amalekites to recover his family and delivers the news. Definitely, the FM frequencies worldwide must have been reporting that Saul and David were at odds. The young man must have thought he would be favoured by David. The young man was killed for having touched the Lord's anointed.
It's interesting how what we don't kill destroys us. Saul didn't do as directed regarding the Amalekites. He lost the Kingdom then and the ignominy of it all is to have an Amalekite kill him. Learn to deal with anything God asks that you put off. May God give us the grace to deal with the flesh because it may be the reason we miss our destiny. Saul didn't make the kind of impact he would have made because of his desire to please men more than God.
David mourned for Saul and Jonathan. David displays a maturity that is my prayer to display. He didn't order a party to celebrate the death of Saul, his tormentor. He instead mourned and extolled the virtues of Saul, the king of Israel. If every child of God did this the world would love us Christians. Instead, we are mocked because we despise and look for every opportunity to put down our enemies. God desires that we honour those whom He has called to authority at every level be it the spouse who is messing about, leaders in the church, government, institutions, schools, colleges and organisations.
David was anointed by Judah as their king and soon the entire Kingdom would be his. He didn't ascend to the throne easily. It was a process. The manner in which David became the King of Israel teaches us that we should understand the power of process. God is a God of processes. Please don't think every miracle comes via a microwave. David fought a good fight to become king. He was laying a template for us to understand that we need to wage good warfare to access that which he has ordained for us. God has released the throne for you, however, the enemy has traps all the way to the throne to take you out for the enemy knows once you get there he is in trouble.
For a season Israel was led by Ishbosheth a son of Saul. His name means ashamed or confusion. As I read this God taught me that sometimes when I see where I am meant to be, I will need to deal with shame and confusion. God desires to remove shame from our thrones. May the shame that is currently occupying the throne of your heart be removed by the mercies of God.
David was a warrior, a very gentle soul and he was not a vindictive man. Not every tribe installed David as King. Only Judah while the rest followed Saul's son. Abner, Saul's General in fighting David's army killed the brother of David Asahel. Joab avenged the death of his brother to the annoyance of David. David declared that Joab and his family would bear a curse in every generation for taking revenge. David must have been pained because he could have killed Saul twice but he refused to take matters into his own on hands. He would have hoped that this would be a lesson to be learnt by all around him. Learn to let God deal with those who are seeking to destroy you.
I don't know where you are in life, however, my prayer is that you become stronger and stronger and take over the throne God has promised you.
Memory Verse: 2 Sam. 3:1
Decree:
Lord, use me for Your glory. Bring me to the place You have ordained for me. I decree that I am growing stronger and stronger as I possess all that God has ordained for me. I will not grow weary or slack in possessing that which God has set for me.
