Lift Other Lives

Day 170

Reading: Proverbs 19:1 - 25:28

God is interested in the wellbeing of our lives. How we treat other people is something God looks at closely. How we treat family members, the words we speak to others, how diligent we are at work are all things addressed in the Book of Proverbs. One very important topic that is discussed in the Book of Proverbs is how the poor are treated and what our responses to their plight should be.

We live in a world where we are becoming more and more self-centred. Where it is easy to never think of others especially with the work routines, bills we face and the dreams to build our castles we should never forget those who don't have. Christianity today is in danger of because of the selfishness of the believer. We have an attitude of 'me, myself and I' which is detrimental to the Kingdom of God. God is interested in your doing well, however, He expects you to pay attention to what pains His heart.   We have allowed our giving to the poor to be consigned just to the community social justice programs whereas God expects it to be a personal responsibility that is driven from our hearts.

He is the Maker of both the rich and poor Proverbs 22:2. Understand that God hears the cry of the poor Psalms 113:7. Being generous to only those we know is not seen as generosity in God's eyes. It is still loving yourself. Giving to the poor is giving to those whom you have no connection with. Those who have no one to help but you become the messenger of hope that God sends when you help them. Remember that when you have mercy on the poor God looks favourably on you Proverbs 14:31. God goes as far as saying that when you are generous to the poor you are lending to God Proverbs 19:17. Understand that when you are generous to the needy you are being not only a blessing but you open your life to being blessed by God.

Guard against any selfishness that would close the door of generosity in your heart. God is not mocked watching even when we say to the one who is asking and we don't have yet, on the one hand, we have Proverbs 3:27.  Let your life be about lifting other lives and you will discover a joy that is unending Proverbs 14:21. May your cry never be shut down because you never heard the cry of the poor Proverbs 21:13.

These things also belong to the wise: it is not good to show partiality in judgment. (italics mine)

A better tomorrow

Everyone is hopeful for a better tomorrow. That's why we say "Good morning" at the start of the day. It's an indicator of the hope within that welcomes the dawning of a new day to bring better fortunes our way. God's mercies are new every morning and His compassion does not fail. When faced with adversity it becomes harder to see a better tomorrow, but resilient people are focused on the fact that trouble is only a comma in the sentence of life. At a time where fear has gripped many hearts because of various reasons, it is difficult to remain hopeful. Without hope, you cannot have the faith necessary to live. Faith is the substance of what is hoped for. Faith gives hope tangibility. To be without hope is to open the door of low living. Hopelessness is the start of damnation in life. You and I were born for a reason. We are not just statistics, making up numbers in any particular nation. You and I were born to reign in life. That situation that has so far made...

Lessons From A Parable

Day 259 Reading: Luke 14:1 - Luke 16:31 The thoughts that God has for you are too many to be counted. Jesus while speaking asked the disciples if they knew the number of hairs that fall off their head? Jesus told them that God is so interested in the minute details about us that He knows when one hair falls down. God is so detailed about our lives because He is good. When you embrace the goodness of God by understanding that God's love towards us is immeasurable. Whilst reading today's passages my heart was refreshed as I read a very famous parable featuring the prodigal son.   Jesus tells us of two sons and a father. The younger son asked for his inheritance and left home leaving the elder son and his father.  The younger went to a faraway land and wasted his life. He soon was dead broke, deserted by his new found friends and looking for a job. He soon was working for a farmer feeding his pigs. His job must have been so mundane with low pay as he ate the food the...

Absalom's Treachery

Day 91 Reading: 2 Sam. 14:1 - 2 Sam. 15:37 One of life's most painful lessons is the treachery of human beings. When family or friends hurt you and leave you grieving the pain is not the same as when someone out on the street does something wrong. The pain goes deeper and it's easy to become bitter. Absalom had fled from Israel knowing that he was a wanted man for the murder and revenge on Ammon his step-brother. Joab arranged for a wise woman to go see David and get him to forgive Absalom. The wise woman made David realise that he was not setting a godly example by exiling Absalom. The wise woman made David understand that God will not banish anyone but he will seek the person out. God will do everything in His power to restore the banished person. The wise woman was asking David not to forget the grace of God that enables one to enjoy forgiveness. David gets Absalom brought back to Jerusalem however for 2 years he didn't see him. Now, this was worse than ...
