The Duty of Man

Day 175

Reading: Ecclesiastes 9:1 - Ecclesiastes 12:14

Everyone is in the hands of God. It may not seem so, however, Solomon declares this whilst also making it clear that no matter what you face God is the final judge of our lives. One thing we are encouraged to have is hope. To have an expectancy that no matter how sad life seems let there be an internal expectation that all will be alright.

The last few chapters of Ecclesiastes is focussed on getting the reader to understand the importance of living for God. The Preacher instructs that one must walk in purity and integrity. His advice to have white garments speaks of having a lifestyle that is pleasing to God. He also advises that your head should never lack oil. He definitely had the understanding that that one reigns in life when anointed to reign. Many today are seeking to reign in life yet they have no anointing to propel them upward. Solomon who married many women urges that a man live joyfully with his wife. A man who practised polygamy didn't advise men to follow him but called on men to live joyfully in a monogamous relationship with his wife.

Solomon makes an observation that is very startling and very true today. Many believers live beneath the blessing God has ordained for them. Solomon wondered why beggars would be riding while princes walked. David in Psalm 82:6-7 warned that of people who are like gods would die like men and fall like princes. We as believers ought to be careful that our lives are not below what God has ordained us to be. We are called to manifest the blessings of God and to showcase God to the earth. We are empowered to be blessed and to be a blessing yet many don't enjoy this right.

The Book of Ecclesiastes closes with a call to serve God. He encourages the young to serve God before it becomes hard to serve Him because of the cares of this world. Every young person should put away sorrow, evil from the heart and serve God because anything else is vanity. He concludes by saying that the whole duty of man is to fear God and to keep His commandments for God will judge all our deeds.

Memory Verse: Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

Decree:

Ecclesiastes 11:5-6
As you do not know what is the way of the wind, or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, so you do not know the works of God who makes everything. In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening do not withhold your hand; for you do not know which will prosper, either this or that, or whether both alike will be good. (italics mine)

A better tomorrow

Everyone is hopeful for a better tomorrow. That's why we say "Good morning" at the start of the day. It's an indicator of the hope within that welcomes the dawning of a new day to bring better fortunes our way. God's mercies are new every morning and His compassion does not fail. When faced with adversity it becomes harder to see a better tomorrow, but resilient people are focused on the fact that trouble is only a comma in the sentence of life. At a time where fear has gripped many hearts because of various reasons, it is difficult to remain hopeful. Without hope, you cannot have the faith necessary to live. Faith is the substance of what is hoped for. Faith gives hope tangibility. To be without hope is to open the door of low living. Hopelessness is the start of damnation in life. You and I were born for a reason. We are not just statistics, making up numbers in any particular nation. You and I were born to reign in life. That situation that has so far made...

Lessons From A Parable

Day 259 Reading: Luke 14:1 - Luke 16:31 The thoughts that God has for you are too many to be counted. Jesus while speaking asked the disciples if they knew the number of hairs that fall off their head? Jesus told them that God is so interested in the minute details about us that He knows when one hair falls down. God is so detailed about our lives because He is good. When you embrace the goodness of God by understanding that God's love towards us is immeasurable. Whilst reading today's passages my heart was refreshed as I read a very famous parable featuring the prodigal son.   Jesus tells us of two sons and a father. The younger son asked for his inheritance and left home leaving the elder son and his father.  The younger went to a faraway land and wasted his life. He soon was dead broke, deserted by his new found friends and looking for a job. He soon was working for a farmer feeding his pigs. His job must have been so mundane with low pay as he ate the food the...

Absalom's Treachery

Day 91 Reading: 2 Sam. 14:1 - 2 Sam. 15:37 One of life's most painful lessons is the treachery of human beings. When family or friends hurt you and leave you grieving the pain is not the same as when someone out on the street does something wrong. The pain goes deeper and it's easy to become bitter. Absalom had fled from Israel knowing that he was a wanted man for the murder and revenge on Ammon his step-brother. Joab arranged for a wise woman to go see David and get him to forgive Absalom. The wise woman made David realise that he was not setting a godly example by exiling Absalom. The wise woman made David understand that God will not banish anyone but he will seek the person out. God will do everything in His power to restore the banished person. The wise woman was asking David not to forget the grace of God that enables one to enjoy forgiveness. David gets Absalom brought back to Jerusalem however for 2 years he didn't see him. Now, this was worse than ...
